About Castro Valley

The Castro Valley district is a county just to the east of San Francisco Bay, located just outside San Leandro. The area is one of the most populated unincorporated regions in the United States, with more than 63,000 residents as of the last census. Not only is the Castro Valley one of the wealthiest parts of California, but also one of the safest places to live.

The area is overwhelmingly liberal in its outlook and has some of the top-rated public schools in the entire region, serving the children of successful San Francisco and Silicon Valley-based workers and execs.

Castro Valley offers a wide variety of amenities, from restaurants to bowling. But perhaps one of the most interesting nearby attractions is the Lake Chabot Regional Park. The park covers several square miles with Lake Chabot as the centerpiece. Visitors can take a walk along one of the many trails throughout the park and enjoy the gently rolling green hills and meadows.

The Castro Valley first saw significant development in the mid-1800s and proved popular among Portuguese immigrants. By 1866, the Redwood school had been built and the community developed around it. Right from the earliest times, the Castro Valley was a kind of residential retreat, well away from the hustle and bustle of downtown San Francisco and San Jose. Today, the Valley is widely regarded as a bedroom community: a place from which people commute to lucrative jobs elsewhere in the region. Most people who live in the area are employed in health care and social assistance.

The reputation of the Castro Valley is reflected in land use. Only around 5 percent of the total developed area is set aside for commercial use. Most of that usage is for retail stores providing convenience services for residents.
